Message from Niloom founder Amir Baradaran

Updated June 27, 2024

Hi - my name is Amir Baradaran, I am the Founder and CEO of Niloom.ai, a platform that incorporates Generative AI to empower all creators to produce sophisticated content in augmented and virtual reality.
I wanted to take a few minutes to welcome you, and to thank you for joining our family.

I feel privileged to come from a family of storytellers. My grandfather was a poet and that love of connecting people through ideas carried through to my mom and later, me. Building Niloom.ai is my way of continuing that tradition, and ensuring that we all have the opportunities to tell our stories in new and incredible ways.

As an artist and a creator, I have always sought new ways to do this. When I discovered the world of spatial computing (at that point, AR) I was blown away. Back then, this technology was just beginning to emerge, and I was fortunate to be part of a community in New York exploring its possibilities.

I was lucky enough to collaborate with the leading AR company at the time, called Metaio. Like all AR, my projects required engineers and developers with coding skills and experience to code and build them. Metaio believed in my vision, and provided me with an army of engineers. Together we collaborated on groundbreaking projects, with exhibitions at the Louvre, MoMA, The New York Armory, and the British Museum.

In 2015 Metaio was acquired by Apple. Overnight I lost my funding, and my army of engineers whose coding skills had made it possible for me to do my work.

After a few moments recalibrating, it dawned on me that the ecosystem had to evolve: we had to find a better way to ensure that anyone and everyone could create spatial computing projects in their own time, on their own terms.

The barriers to entry had to be overcome - there are just too many amazing opportunities to explore, and stories to be told. I spent some time considering the options.

At this point I was lecturing in spatial computing at Columbia University. While there I realized that the way to achieve my goal of unleashing the huge potential for the creative community to join the AR ecosystem, was to build a platform. One that made it easy, cost effective, and fast for people to create AR projects.

After a lot of soul searching and discussion, we decided to call the platform Niloom.ai I’m often asked about what it signifies. If you’ll indulge me for one more minute, I’d love to share this with you. In Persian, the loom (دار بافت) symbolizes creativity and tradition, weaving threads of past and present into society's fabric. "Niloo" (نیلو), meaning indigo, embodies mystery and wisdom, a canvas for imagination in Persian culture. Together, "Niloom" represents innovation and creativity, a place to create, where tradition meets innovation, and stories are woven into the fabric of technology. For these reasons I feel that Niloom.ai is a far better reflection of our platform than our “previous name”, ABXR Engine.
After three incredible years of building and learning, and collaborating and prototyping, we are now ready to share it with the world. I am so humbled and grateful and excited. The opportunity to give life to a new community of artists, creators, and storytellers is a dream that is about to be realized!

Thank you for reading this, and thank you for joining us!

Welcome to Niloom.ai!
